President’s Potpourri

This year has certainly gone by very fast. Of course, every MAR past president I spoke to told me my term would feel this way. Yet, despite what they told me, I think it only really made sense when I felt it for myself as president. With that in mind, I wanted to use my last column as president to share some of my memories over the past 12 months. 

January

I had the opportunity to testify on Beacon Hill for the first time as MAR President. We were testifying in front of the Joint Committee on Revenue. The Committee wanted to know how MAR thought the recently proposed tax reform would impact home buyers, home sellers, and the Massachusetts real estate industry. 

February

We had our first Executive Committee meeting under MAR’s new governance structure that started on the first day of the year. Under this new structure, the Executive Committee meets more frequently and is able to respond more quickly to the changing needs of Realtors®, the Association, and the market. 

March

This month gave me additional insight into the market, because my husband and I became part of the baby boomers downsizing trend. We sold our home and moved into an in-law apartment in our son and daughter-in-law's home to enjoy our lifestyle and be with our grandsons. 

April 

One thing I talk about frequently is the importance of RPAC (Realtors® Political Action Committee) and the Realtor® Party. The Realtor® Party is the combination of Realtors® and Realtor® Associations working to protect and promote homeownership and property investment. 

In April, we held an all-day Realtor® Party training session for local association presidents and presidents-elect, local government affairs chairs, RPAC chairs, and association executives. We all got the most updated information on the issues and how to work together. 

May 

At the NAR Midyear Meetings in Washington DC, I was the first MAR president who had to make —and not receive—a presentation to another state association after our New England Patriots lost the big game to the Philadelphia Eagles. While we had to eat a little crow that day, we had a lot of fun (and made some great connections) with our Realtor® friends from Pennsylvania. 

June

Realtor® Day on Beacon Hilll is always a great event and I will always remember having the honor and privilege of introducing our keynote speaker, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. What made it more meaningful is that MAR and our real estate coalition joined the Massachusetts Municipal Association to support the Governor’s Housing Choice Initiative. 

July 

We learned that we were successful in defeating a bill on Beacon Hill that would have required a mandatory energy audit and an energy score on a home prior to listing it for sale. It was a great team effort from Realtors® across the state. And we’ll be ready to fight the bill if it’s re-introduced during the next session. 

August

This is the month when we do the hard work on the 2019 MAR budget. It’s always a long day of working with the professional staff to look at member counts, our strategic plan, and current and future programs to make sure we’re meeting the needs of you, the individual member, and the membership as a whole. 

September

Getting the opportunity to be with a big cross-section of Realtors® from across the state at our Professional Awards Reception and our Conference & Trade Show is always a great experience. But to get the chance to attend as MAR President was really special for me. 

November 

Ok, this issue of Bay State Realtor® will already be in your hands when we get to November, but I can tell you that I am looking forward to the National Association of Realtors® Conference & Expo that is taking place in Boston. I hope I get the chance to see you there! 

December

I hope each of you have had a great 2018. I hope if you haven’t had the chance or the opportunity to get involved in the Massachusetts Association of Realtors®, that you will consider it for 2019. Happy New Year!
