Open to Inspiration

by Eric Berman - MAR Director of Communications | Aug 30, 2017
There are some magazine issues for which this column writes itself. When it does, it’s because I know exactly what I want to say. The words come firing out from my brain through my fingers and onto the computer screen. Other times the flashing cursor feels like it’s mocking me. Today started out as one of those days.
Thankfully, it didn’t take long for me to find my inspiration. It came when I read a post from a colleague in the real estate industry. My colleague was announcing that she was making a career shift. She wasn’t leaving real estate, but significantly changing what she did within the industry. It got me thinking about what it takes to make a change like that. Many of you who I’ve met over the years started in real estate as a second career. And unlike my colleague, the industries you’ve come from might not have had anything to do with real estate. Yet, you decided to make a significant change that eventually led you to real estate and becoming a Realtor®.

My unscientific opinion (but what I’ve learned from talking to you) is that you immersed yourselves in the business. You took advantage of the backgrounds you had and combined them with as much education and learning as you could. And just as importantly, when you became successful, you didn’t stop learning.

The MAR Conference & Tradeshow is September 25 & 26 on Cape Cod and will be full of opportunities for you to learn and find your inspiration. In the feature, The Greatest Event of the Year, by Sarah Walker on page 12, some of the national speakers give you a sneak peek on what they’ll be discussing. They also provide tips on how to make the most of your time at their sessions.

Keeping with the education theme, this issue’s Insider column is written by Northeastern University Journalism Professor Carlene Hempel. In her column, Professor Hempel provides insight into what it takes to write for a digital audience.

Finally, don’t miss our “Ask a Millennial” column where MAR’s Social Media Expert Leslie Fowle highlights what makes Facebook Messenger such an important communications tool.

PS. If you see me at the conference, I'd love to get feedback on the magazine.
